Campus Living Goes Upscale

The name Vista del Sol may conjure up images of sparkling blue water surrounded palm trees swaying in the tropical sun. This isn’t far from the truth, except instead of a luxury resort, this Vista del Sol is a new student housing development opening at Arizona State University.
The Wall Street Journal today featured an article about American Campus Communities, the owner and manager of Vista del Sol, which is one of several real estate investment trusts focused on the student housing market. Their upscale accommodations provide two big advantages to universities: superior amenities to help attract students used to (or seeking out) posh accommodations, and a reduction in the time and resources universities must spend to maintain dorm buildings themselves. Within California, American Campus Communities currently provides student housing options at UC Irvine, San Diego State University, CSU Sacramento, CSU San Bernardino, and CSU Fresno. ACC’s main competitor, Education Realty Trust, has properties at UC Santa Barbara, UC Riverside, CSU Sacramento, and CSU San Marcos.
