Big Gifts to California Colleges
- Posted by Sarah Ziegler on May 6th, 2008 in Articles of Interest
The Chronicle of Higher Education is reporting a $50 million gift by the Bernard Osher Foundation to California’s public community colleges designed to help encourage other donors, large and small, to support the community college system. An initial $25 million will endow scholarships immediately, with the remaining $25 million offered on a matching basis if the community colleges can engage other donors. In addition to the community college gift, the foundation is also endowing $20 million in scholarships at select UC and CSU campuses. These gifts are especially welcome in California’s current budgetary crisis with fee increases and program cuts on the horizon.
